Paula Fitzgerald M.A., LMFT
Biography
I began my mental health career over 23 years ago working with adolescent girls in a residential treatment facility. I then moved on to work with women and children in a Battered Women’s shelter and spent 15 years working with high risk children, adults and families as the Out Patient Director for a non-profit agency. During that time I became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
After working several years as a Child Custody Mediator for the California Superior Courts I relocated to New York. My work with adults and families has continued through private practice where I focus my work on high conflict co-parenting, couples therapy and individual therapy. Additionally I have continued my professional experience by becoming a Family and Divorce Mediator and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist here in New York.
With over 20 years of experience working with families, individuals and couples — as either a therapist or a mediator — I have come to find that occasionally people get stuck in patterns of behavior and communication styles that are no longer appropriate. Sometimes someone is facing a new or altered phase in their life which they’re not prepared for and they’re uncertain how to proceed. When those behaviors or life phases interfere with someone’s personal satisfaction, family life, employment, school, or relationships, it is my role as a therapist to provide them with compassionate, non-judgemental guidance to help them become aware of the solutions and abilities they already possess, embrace new skills, and understand the power of positive communication.
My role as a mediator is to provide a safe and neutral environment to assist people in opening conversations and developing plans that allow them to make decisions that help them better manage their lives and reach their goals.
Regardless of what service I am providing, or the role that I am in, you will receive professional, respectful service based on your individual needs and goals.
